Slow Start, Strong Finish

Overall, it was a slow start to the pre-rut, but with temps dipping down into the low 30s, what a difference a front can make in the deer woods. Sitting in the dark I could hear grunting, chasing and snort wheezing in the woods in front of me. After daylight broke things quieted down. An hour later a doe and a fawn came out in front of me with her hocks brown, the first doe finally started to smell good. A 120-125 inch 8pt followed. Along with two other small basket bucks, and this guy was the fourth. The little bucks spooked the doe back to him at 45 yards with no clear shot. Everyone went back into the woods and the chase was on again. Grunting, chasing, snort wheezing. All went quiet again and about 15 min later he came circling back trying to find that that doe. This time into 18 yards just how we drew it up when we first made property changes.

Creating a wall of deadfall along the whole property line so they could only go in and out of the property at our stand locations This buck was five years in the making of hard work and sweat equity. Had to yell to stop him because he was on the run. A well placed grizzlystik behind the mathewsinc Z7 through the front shoulders. Dropped him in the tracks! My biggest buck to date! Likely grossing in the 160s but score doesn’t matter on a 5 plus year old brute like this! Over 200lbs dressed and we had seen this deer last year but he disappeared in October. Those pics will be in our story. This stuff never gets old. Good luck to those with a tag still. Get in the woods, actions just getting started!!!!.

It was a calm morning with no wind. Very cold 15 degrees. I went early in the morning into the timber to climb up my treestand. He came by my treestand 20 minutes into legal light. I shot him at 20 yards broadside. I watched him for about 10 minutes before I shot him. Couldn’t have been a better way[...]
